| HBO Go Could Be the Next Netflix Posted: 21 Jan 2012 11:35 AM PST As a Time Warner Cable customer, I was one of the last cable subscribers out there to get access to HBO Go. For months now, many of you have probably been using the streaming service, and to see a column about it now might surprise you. But don't hold it against me — I was a victim of the oddly contentious relationship between Time Warner Cable and its former corporate overlord, Time Warner.
Regardless, I now have HBO Go. And after using it for the past several days for more hours than I'd like to count, I can say now, with certainty, that HBO Go has a strong chance of becoming the next Netflix. Now, I'll freely admit that there are some major differences between HBO Go and Netflix, the most notable being that HBO's service only offers its own content. What's more, it's only available to HBO subscribers, which could stunt its growth a bit. But beyond that, I'm seeing nothing but good things from HBO Go. The service works exceptionally well, and offers all the episodes of all the shows the network has aired in recent years. What's more, it also includes movies, documentaries, and HBO's stellar sports series, making it the complete package, in my book. Would it be nice to have content from other services? Sure. But you know what? HBO's series lineup is so good, I don't quite miss access to, say, "The Office" or "How I Met Your Mother." I'm more than content watching "The Sopranos," "Entourage," or "Curb Your Enthusiasm." "Time Warner has strong ties with Hollywood, putting it ahead of the game against Netflix"In the coming years, I think HBO, with the right strategy, could make its service far better than Netflix. Time Warner has strong ties with Hollywood studios, automatically putting it ahead of the game against Netflix. And if it can start bringing the service to more devices, including game consoles and set-top boxes — its Achilles heel right now — I could see HBO Go's adoption skyrocketing. Whereas Netflix has quickly become a TV-focused service that comes with outdated movies for everyone else, HBO Go has the potential to become the go-to place for movie content. With the right content deals, I just don't see any way Time Warner won't be able to add many more films to the service to round out what is already a content-heavy solution. So, I see nothing but potential for HBO Go. I was skeptical of its value initially, but after getting to try the service out, it's clear now that my concerns were unwarranted. Are there limitations to its focus that could hold it back from realizing its full potential? Sure. Might HBO try to stick with its current business model and fail to achieve the kind of results it could? Of course. But if the company plays its cards right, I think there's a real chance HBO Go becomes a better — and more-desired — destination than Netflix. | Notion Ink Adam II detailed: TI chipset and Ice Cream Sandwich Posted: 21 Jan 2012 01:17 AM PST Notion Ink has announced the first details of its second-generation Adam II Android tablet, revealing a partnership with Texas Instruments and plans for using a customized version of Ice Cream Sandwich. The new tablet – seemingly called Adam II, though as far back as mid-2010 Notion Ink was talking about an “Eve” successor to its Adam first-attempt – will use a chip from TI’s OMAP44xx range, jumping ship from NVIDIA and the Tegra series in the original tablet.
The OMAP44xx choice, Notion Ink says, has benefits on performance, multimedia playback and even the range of non-traditional tablet tasks users might through at the new slate. The PowerVR SGX5xx GPU paired with the chipset will, along with Notion Ink’s own software architecture, mean Adam II can turn its hand to being “a logic analyzer, medical imaging device, signal acquisition and processing, 3D modeling and multi-media [device].” TI’s Wi-Link 7.0 - which pulls WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and FM transmit/receive into a single chipset – and Phoenix Audio Power Amplifiers will also be included. As for the software, Adam II will rely on Notion Ink’s own “Modular Based Software Architecture” which will apparently allow for apps to take advantage of hardware features in a drag-&-drop environment. That, the company reckons, should mean non-programmers will able to create their own custom apps and games:
The tablet market has been a baptism by fire for Notion Ink, with the company’s ambitious first-generation plans giving them lessons – often painful – in how to handle excessive customer demand, aftersales care, hardware returns and more. Still, with none of the Android tablet manufacturers yet conclusively challenging Apple’s iPad, we’d like to think there was still space for an imaginative alternative to the all-conquering iOS slate. No word on when we might see the Notion Ink Adam II launch; the company has said it plans to be a little more circumspect with its public promises so as not to overhype the new model. | iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak is a success Posted: 20 Jan 2012 08:33 PM PST On your mark, get set, go! A jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 has just been released by the “Dev Dream Team” just moments ago. Apparently, cracking the A5 was “Not exactly a walk in the park” according to the entire team. The jailbreak is termed GreenPois0n Absinthe and is now available for download on Mac OS X alone. And forget the tethered jailbreak – untethered is where it’s at!
Users must be on iOS 5.0.1 or this WILL NOT WORK. And for the record – if you update to iOS 5.0.2 when it comes out, you’ll completely lose the jailbreak. Lets thank posixninja, pod2g, and nikias for all their hard work. They stressed multiple times how difficult exploiting the Apple A5 actually was, so its probably impossible to even count the amount of hours they have spent prior to this public release. Apple will likely release their next incremental update soon, so be sure to snag the jailbreak before then. Good luck! | Years record player translates tree rings into music tragically Posted: 20 Jan 2012 04:12 PM PST The project known as Years is one by Bartholomaus Traubeck in which a record player has been modified to shine light and receive back signals from slices of trees. What the player receives from the bounced-back light is no less than bits of information translated from the rings made through the tree as it grew from a tiny sapling. In this way, the tragedy that is the fact that the tree had to die in order to tell its story is made quite apparent to the viewer and the listener.
This project has no future plans to become a mass-made or distributed product, but in that the video you’re seeing is made so well what you’ll not possibly miss the point, it’s made wonderful from start to finish. As the tree’s years rings are analyzed for their strength, says the creator, so too are they analyzed for their thickness and rate of growth, and turned into a song that describes it all. Have a peek a the manifesto for this project here:
This project is made up of a modified turntable, a camera, acrylic glass, vvvv (a multipurpose programmable toolkit), veneer, and of course a computer. The whole thing rings in at 90x50x50 cm and again, there is only one. The artist worked with or would otherwise like to thank Land Salzburg, Schmiede, Pro-ject Audio, Karla Spiluttini, Ivo Francx, vvvv, and Rohol. Get your tissues out, lovers of nature, this is going to get messy for your eyeballs. | SOPA sponsor has another Internet bill that records you 24/7 Posted: 20 Jan 2012 03:36 PM PST Senator Lamar Smith, lead sponsor of the currently dead SOPA bill you’ve heard so much about, has another bill in the works that uses Child Pornography as a screen to push through an amendment that’ll have your internet service provider tracking all of your financial dealings online. Each time you use a credit card, each time you read your bank statement, all of your IP information and your search history will be required by your ISP to be stored for 18 months at all times. This bill is H.R. 1981 and will have more dire consequences than SOPA or PIPA ever had the potential to have.
What it does is to amend several rules that have to do with Child Pornography and preventing it, the bill itself called the “Protecting Children From Internet Pornographers Act of 2011.” What it also does is to change the U.S. code Chapter 18 section 2703 Required Disclosure of Customer Communications or Records to include a requirement that your internet service provider do the following:
While it was legal for the government to issue a subpoena for the viewing of the information they speak about here before, it was not part of the law that internet service providers capture or retain that information at any point. In effect, while before the authorities would need to first find a reason for you to need to be watched to get the ISP to start collecting information from you, that information will already exist on file, effectively meaning you’re being watched and recorded even if you’ve done nothing wrong. Don’t worry though, there’s an additional set of lines that should placate you because it’s so very kind of them to think of:
So don’t worry, your information will be “stored securely” so noone else can access it! But if they do access it, your ISP will give you “prompt notice” so you can change all your credit card numbers, hide your kids, hide your wife, and hide your husband. This bill has currently cleared its committee, this meaning that the next step is a full vote. This bill needs to be stopped, and if I might go one better, Lamar Smith needs to be stopped, for the good of the internet and YOUR privacy.
